Evidence-Based Addiction Therapy & Recovery

Addiction is a pattern of substance use or compulsive behaviour that becomes difficult to control, even when it is causing harm or disrupting important areas of life. Over time, addiction can affect mental health, relationships, family life, work, finances and overall wellbeing.

Our evidence-based addiction therapy focuses on understanding what is driving and maintaining the cycle, identifying triggers and patterns, and developing healthier strategies to support meaningful and sustainable recovery.

Where withdrawal or medical management may be required, appropriate medical or specialist support should form part of the broader treatment plan.

Recovery Is More Than Stopping the Behaviour

Addictive behaviours can become connected with stress, trauma-related experiences, difficult emotions, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, impulsivity or attempts to escape emotional distress.

Understanding the function the substance or behaviour has come to serve can be an important part of recovery. Addressing the behaviour without understanding the factors that contribute to and maintain the cycle may leave important underlying difficulties unresolved.

Every person's circumstances are different. Therapy is tailored to your individual needs and may support harm reduction, increased control or abstinence-based goals.

Our Approach to Addiction Therapy

Here is how we work together through every stage of your recovery:

1. Assessment & Therapeutic Goals

We begin by developing an understanding of your substance use or behavioural patterns, relevant history, current circumstances, risks and therapeutic goals. Treatment is then tailored to your individual needs and priorities.

2. Understanding Underlying & Co-Occurring Difficulties

Therapy explores the psychological, emotional, relational and environmental factors that may contribute to or maintain addictive behaviour, including trauma-related concerns, anxiety, depression and emotional distress.

3. Triggers, Cravings & Emotional Regulation

Evidence-based therapeutic approaches are used to identify triggers, strengthen emotional regulation and coping capacity, manage cravings and develop alternative responses to high-risk situations.

4. Recovery, Relationships & Relapse Prevention

Therapy may also address shame, self-worth, relationship difficulties and the impact addiction has had on trust and communication. Relapse-prevention planning focuses on identifying warning signs, strengthening protective factors and supporting sustainable recovery.

Addiction Does Not Exist in Isolation

Addiction can become interconnected with mental health, trauma, relationships, family circumstances, employment and behavioural patterns. For some clients, difficulties in one area can intensify difficulties in another.

Our therapeutic approach considers these connections rather than focusing solely on stopping a substance or behaviour.

Addiction & Relationship Recovery

Stopping substance use does not automatically restore trust.

Relationships may continue to carry the effects of secrecy, broken promises, resentment, monitoring, communication breakdown and fear of relapse.

Where appropriate, therapy can also address the impact addiction has had on the relationship, because addiction recovery and relationship recovery may sometimes need to occur alongside one another.
